This Board shall assist the Pastor(s) in the spiritual life, public worship, and church discipline of the congregation.
The Board of Elders shall:
- Pray for the Pastor(s) and other spiritual leaders.
- Be concerned about the spiritual, emotional, and physical health and welfare of the Pastor(s) and their families.
- Exercise leadership in gathering call lists and calling a new Pastor when a vacancy occurs.
- Assist the Pastors in counseling with difficult cases and in finding peaceful and God-pleasing solutions to personal problems within the congregation.
- Insure that the congregation functions in accordance with the established DOCTRINE of the church as listed in Article III of the Constitution.
- Maintain discipline within the congregation according to Scripture, the Lutheran Confessions and Article V of the Constitution and Article IV of the Bylaws of this congregation and exercise discipline when required.
- Engage in continual review of communion and church attendance of all members, make calls on delinquents, follow-up on all children in the congregation until they are baptized.
- Take special interest in the spiritual needs of the members of the congregation who are shut-ins.
- Take special interest in the spiritual needs of the members of the congregation who are hospitalized.
- Take special interest in all new members of the congregation.
- Be concerned about and supervise through instruction of youth and adults for confirmation and church membership in accordance with the policies and aims of the Boards of Christian Education.
- Keep a record of and show spiritual concern for those members who are away from the parish in the Armed Forces, in college, or in prison.
- Be responsible for the care of the altar and all things pertaining to it. Such responsibility may be delegated to an ALTAR GUILD.
- Provide for a program of USHERING for the sake of good order at all worship services. Supervision of the usher program may be delegated to a Head Usher and an Assistant Usher, elected by the congregation.
- Oversee the instruction of and supervise the youth who serve as ACOLYTES for worship services.
- Meet periodically with the Organists and Voice and Instrumental Choir Directors so that all service music in God-pleasing.
- Recommend to the Congregational Assembly any policies regarding special services such as weddings, funerals, and the like.
- Consist of 15 members, with each member serving a 3 year team of office. Only men may serve on this Board. Five board members shall be elected each year and no member shall succeed himself in office.
- Meet during the month of June to re-organize for the coming year. All out-going and newly-elected members shall be present to insure a continuity of programs and activities.
- Elect one member to serve as Director, one member to serve as Secretary, and one member to serve as a member of the Parish Planning Council. The Secretary shall keep a permanent set of minutes of each meeting and such minutes shall be the property of the congregation. A copy of the minutes shall also be given to the President of the congregation.
- Establish job descriptions and responsibilities for each member of this board.
- Submit an annual budget as requested by the Parish Planning Council and the Financial Administrator.
- Request a financial review, if necessary, from any organization, group, or committee for which it is responsible.
